Bad Dentistry - Holistic Dentist That Wasn't Holistic

What follows below is a real case study submitted by a reader of this website. It describes how their health was harmed by bad dentistry.

I am a man 56, 139 lbs, 6 feet tall.
I wanted to have a second opinion when I went to this holistic dentist having been told that I needed two crowns, a gum draft and two fillings. I had been to this dentist for three years and nothing needed to be done, then all of a sudden all this and no change took place as I constantly check and take pictures of my teeth.

At first the initial exam at the holistic dentist was quite detailed. He seemed experienced as he is about 60 and also helped in the translation of the book 'Poison By The Mouthful' written by Myron Wentz; he was active in opposing fluoridation of Quebec City's municipal water. He proposed replacing all my 16 mercury fillings with biocompatible material, but without checking compatibility.
He proposed about $2600 for the complete replacement. He said there was no need for the gum graft, nor crowns. There were to be 4 sessions, one for each quadrant.
I did the first two sessions, lower teeth which were in good condition, I felt that the work was being done carelessly, I told myself I will not trust him with my upper teeth which needed more delicate work.
When I looked at the work done, it was not pretty and I was scared these good teeth would turn very bad.

I went then to another holistic dentist, who looked at my teeth, said the work was OK, but was more the style of a mother calming a child rather than bringing information.

I went to another dentist, not holistic, but this time he was competent. I had my upper teeth mercury fillings replaced, there was need for a crown, and he replaced 5 fillings on lower teeth made by the first holistic dentist. I felt he was competent and wanted to do a good job. The crown was so well made, that it made my bite much better; I had explained to him all the ordeal of the first holistic dentist. I felt that good work with a non holistic dentist was better. The stress is more damaging than less bio compatible fillings (no mercury here, but white composite). The x-ray showed mercury left by the first holistic dentist.

I sent a letter with photographs to the holistic dentist to claim my money back, but he did not respond. I did not have the strength to confront him at a small claims court.

So I paid $1700 to the first holistic dentist, and paid 1800$ to the second.

Even though many holistic dentists use less toxic materials, it doesn't mean that they do better dentistry. The time and care the dentist takes is of most importance. In general I recommend people see holistic and biological dentists. But just because a dentist looks good or natural on the outside, it doesn't mean they are good dentists. The opposite may also be true to some extent.
